Building Information Modeling (BIM) Grows Dramatically

McGraw-Hill Construction's New
BIM SmartMarket Research Study

McGraw-Hill Construction's New BIM SmartMarket Research StudyBuilding Information Modeling (BIM) has been around since the 1970s.

Where traditional building design relied on a foundation of blueprints, including plans, elevations, and sections, BIM goes beyond the basic considerations of height, width, and depth to include additional dimensions and concerns.

  • BIM considers Time and Cost in an integral way with Design
  • BIM involves spatial relationships, light analysis, geographic information, and more
  • BIM can be understood as the “virtual construction” of a building before the foundation is dug, with the benefits of reduced uncertainty, improved safety, and early problem solving in simulation

A study by McGraw-Hill Construction in 2012 shows that BIM adoption has increased dramatically in just the last 5 years. In 2007 only 28% of surveyed companies used BIM. By 2012, that figure had risen to 71%.

Where architects proved to be the leading BIM adopters at the start, today contractors have come into their own where Building Information Modeling is concerned. Contractors are now the leading adopters, with 74% of surveyed firms using some form of BIM.

The top benefits enjoyed by contractors using BIM include –

  • Minimizing the need for rework
  • Reducing the length of the project
  • Improved profitability (directly related to a smoother, quicker project, with less errors)

Of course, that’s only the start. The list of benefits and return on investment for BIM is rather robust and at times surprising, including fewer claims and litigations reported by up to 28% of firms surveyed.

If Building Information Modeling is not used in your construction practices, it’s time to investigate the possibilities. The hard lesson for everyone in the construction industry is this: we need to move past 19th century techniques and practices to remain competitive in a 21st century world.
