HVAC Trends in 2019

A Mix of Technology and a Shrinking Labor Force

HVAC Trends in 20192019 is shaping up to be another year of growth in the HVAC industry.

It's a trend that has been ongoing since at least 2011, but which may get an additional boost this year as commercial and residential installations from the 1990’s age into a period of necessary repairs and replacements.

There appear to be three main forces, or trends, shaping the future of HVAC.

  • Market demand, including both new construction and repairs/retrofits.
  • Technology advancement focused on efficient energy use.
  • A shortage of skilled labor as Baby Boomers retire.

Contractors, installers, duct fabricators, and career-minded trade school students all have an opportunity to take advantage of HVAC trends in 2019.

Market Growth. According to a recent article on the ACHR News website, interviewing a handful of the country’s top HVAC executives, a strong economy and continued growth are the order of the day. According to Kevin McNamara, senior vice president and general manager at LG Air Conditioning Technologies:

“There has been plenty of business to go around. As new facilities are being built and older ones are being renovated or repurposed, the story of comfort, technology, and efficiency going hand in hand does not change.”

HVAC TechnologyTechnology. While the fabrication and installation of ductwork has changed little over the years, the technology surrounding HVAC is undergoing a sea change. Efficiency standards, smart homes and smart buildings, the Internet of Things, and the technology surrounding duct estimating, manufacturing, and building information modeling offer advancements in comfort and cost savings never before available.

A Changing Labor Market. Baby Boomers have started to retire, and they are taking their skills with them. Too few students have been encouraged to enter the trades, and many young people have difficulty passing required drug screenings. The shortage of skilled labor is forcing contractors and installers to adopt process efficiencies that reduce onsite labor needs, including elimination of field measuring and sketching as well as developing installation practices that can be handled by less skilled labor.

At the same time, the HVAC industry represents wide open opportunity for career-mind trade school students, where better than average pay and career stability can be expected.

Your Partner in Navigating the Future of HVAC

At ZEN Industries, we’ve been a growing part of the HVAC industry for 20 years.

HVAC LaborStarting from a core business of ductwork fabrication, we’ve developed a suite of comprehensive services designed to help contractors, installers, and architects save money, improve quality, and reduce the stress that comes with on site conflicts and delivery errors.

  • Our complete ductwork line means the convenience of reliable sourcing from one fabrication facility. Whether you need spiral, rectangular, specialty metal, PCD, or heavy industrial ductwork, as well as curbs, rails, and fittings – ZEN delivers some of the best ductwork in the industry.
  • At ZEN, we work hard to stay on the cutting edge of industry technology. For us, that means efficient duct fabrication at lower costs, high tech estimating and building information modeling to eliminate error and the cost of resolving issues and trade conflicts on-site.
  • We’ve developed processes that help contractors eliminate on-site field measuring and sketching labor, and we produce, organize, and deliver duct in ways that allow contractors to use less labor and less skilled labor during installation.

Over the years we’ve built our systems and processes to the point of saving contractors who work with us up to 35% from duct order through installation. Taken all together, we call these methods the ZEN Way.

Before We Fabricate a Single Piece of Duct

Before a single piece of duct is fabricated, the skilled draftsmen at ZEN Industries use EastCoast CAD/CAM software to prepare accurate duct drawings at a fraction of the cost of classical paper drafting. We can:

  • Deliver reliable shop drawings up to 50% faster.
  • Reduce errors to historic lows, while meeting the most demanding specifications.
  • Deliver accurate data directly to your fabrication facility, or ours.
  • Significantly reduce the risk of clashes and collisions during installation.
  • Assure that each duct section is precision fit to its location, connections, and supports – precisely labeling all the components we manufacture.

Beyond shop drawings, ZEN also:

  • Helps you eliminate field measuring and field layout, as well as optimize field labor.
  • Precision Estimating. ZEN’s experienced teams use the latest software in ways that help you boost sales, decrease turnaround time on quotes, and streamline the sales process.
  • Coordination Drawings. Working with Building Information Modeling (BIM) data, ZEN can precisely position ductwork in virtual models, eliminating conflict between the trades on-site and resulting in significant savings.

Throughout the entire process we work to optimize the number of standard lengths of duct and minimize the number of joints and fittings.

At ZEN Industries, we’ve seen automation and improved workflow processes deliver real cost savings up to 35%. In an industry where labor is becoming scarcer and more valuable by the day.
