Steel Prices Lowering?

It Looks like Peak Steel Prices Have Passed

ZEN Industries Coil LineIn September of this year, Steel Market Update showed a decline in hot-rolled steel prices for the first time in a year or more.

The change was small, a mere $5 per hundredweight (CWT). Nevertheless, steel users seem to think a decline in steel prices is near, with 80% of executives believing hot-rolled steel prices have peaked and that cold-rolled and coated products have achieved flat or declining prices.

Here at ZEN Industries, we’ve seen the beginnings of this predicted change.

“On the structural side, we indeed saw a small pricing decrease, the first since Aug. 2020. I actually feel the pricing will start to drop soon….

At $1950 a ton, many large US steel consumers have imported large allotments of steel, saving up to $500.00 a ton from buying imports vs. US steel.

The demand is lowering, scrap is lowering, pressure from imports and a consumer base that has had enough price gouging are all leading to lower pricing.

The question is when and how much? Some analysists are saying the pricing could decline rapidly, other state a slow return to lower prices.”

HVAC Costs Continue to Rise

ZEN Indusries Coil LineWhile raw material prices play a part, the HVAC industry —like construction as a whole— has been affected by multiple challenges, all serving to drive prices higher. Covid 19, Tariffs, Shipping Bottlenecks, Labor Shortages, and Increasing Demand all play their part as both homeowners and businesses reinvest in comfort and livability.

All these factors have conspired to create a situation where manufacturers must bump pricing several times a year, if not quarterly. Falling prices in any one area will only modestly affect the inflationary pressures driving HVAC cost decisions. Nevertheless, as corona virus concerns diminish, bottlenecks ease, and some tariff adjustments are made, the rate of increase is likely to slow and possibly ease back in the coming year.

While the current environment certainly presents challenges, the U.S, HVAC systems market is still projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.9% over the next seven years, reaching 197.5 billion dollars in value by 2028.

The Benefits of Spiral Duct

ZEN Industries Spiral DuctWhy are more commercial building projects choosing spiral duct? Spiral brings substantial cost savings, making an appealing choice for today’s architects and project managers.

Spiral duct allows for less weight in material to achieve the same airflow, it also requires less insulation… a clear economic advantage.

Another appealing aspect of spiral duct is that it leaks much less than rectangular. So much so, that spiral duct is code-exempt from the sealing requirements stipulated under ASHRAE’s 9.1 for residential buildings.

Spiral Duct Outperforms and Looks Better

Not only does spiral duct win out in cost-efficiency, it adds value through quality and design appeal.

The look and appearance of spiral duct is generally seen as more aesthetically pleasing, making spiral duct a visual component of design. It can be displayed openly in public spaces, reducing construction and maintenance costs while increasing ventilation efficiency.

Spiral duct allows air to travel at a significantly lower pressure, while moving the same volume as rectangular duct with comparable airflow. This enables HVAC systems employing spiral duct to not only operate more quietly, but to be more energy efficient.

Because a spiral duct system requires less power to move the same volume of air, it adds more value to the installation in the long run, creating energy savings for the customer.

That makes spiral duct:

  • Better Sealed
  • Better Air Movement
  • Less Expensive
  • Less Noisy
  • Easier to Maintain
